A.4.5 When studying a science-related problem, decide what changes over time are occurring or have occurred
When I was in fifth grade, I remember having different lab groups. Each group got a different mold/fungi to grow in four different petri dishes. Each dish was kept at a different temperature which our teacher was in control of. Our job was to record the changes that were made in the growth of the mold/fungi in the dishes. At the end of the week, each group wrote their data results on the white board and we had to make a graph for each different mold/fungi and each different temperature they were kept at. Then we had answer some questions that were asking what mold/fungi grew the fastest/slowest and at which temperature.
B.4.2 Acquire information about people who have contributed to the development of major ideas in the sciences and learn about the cultures in which these people lived and worked
In my high school biology class, we had to pick a biologist to do a research paper on. We were in the library doing research on different databases and websites. We also had to find a hard copy to incorporate into our paper somewhere. Our last few paragraphs of the paper was describing how the world is now different because of this scientist.
C.4.3 Select multiple sources of information to help answer questions selected for classroom investigations
In my BIO 101 class during first semester, we each were given a different country to research. We had a list of questions to look up such as the GDP and average life expectancy. We compared each country to our own and discovered how spoiled we are here in America.
D.4.6 Observe and describe physical events in objects at rest or in motion
In my high school physics class we learned all about objects that are in motion vs. objects that are at rest. We recorded data and did the calculations to come up with the missing variable. I remember learning many different formulas and equations that applied to everyday things. We then had to apply the experiment to a real life event or situation we were in. Some people thought of things that could have happened to them and their stories were very exotic.
E.4.6 Using the science themes, find patterns and cycles in the earth's daily, yearly, and long-term changes
In my 9th grade earth science class, I remember talking about the weather and seasons. We talked about how the earth's axis is tilted and that is why we experience different seasons. My teacher also mentioned something about the polar magnets shifting over time; he said that eventually they would move far enough to where they would "snap" the opposite way. This would through out all of the electrical fields and we would go into another dark age...
F.4.3 Illustrate* the different ways that organisms grow through life stages and survive to produce new members of their type
In biology we learned about the circle of life and who each living thing in the world depends on another. The rainforest was one topic that was really amazing to me. We watched a video in class about the rain forest and how everything is somehow connected. It talked about some species re-producing and depending on other plants or animals to help them.
G.4.4 Identify* the combinations of simple machines in a device used in the home, the workplace, or elsewhere in the community, to make or repair things, or to move goods or people
I wen to visit my cousin in New York City over Memorial Day weekend. There are so many different types of transportation in that city. We took the subway and all we had to do was swipe a card that had money on it to get through. We could also use that same card for the bus system. Also, if you are switching subways or buses and have to swipe your card again, it won't charge you if it has been less than four ours. This is a really good idea because some people might only be grabbing lunch or meeting someone and don't want to pay the two way trip.
H.4.3 Show* how science has contributed to meeting personal needs, including hygiene, nutrition, exercise, safety, and health care
In high school I took a nutrition class. In that class we talked about what foods to eat and what foods to stay away from. We also talked a lot about portion control which a lot of people have trouble with especially in the United State due to the large portion sized at restaurants and in stored like Sam's Club. People who eat healthy are also more likely to exercise more often. When you are a healthy person you choose a safer lifestyle as well.
